CHAPTER 10

ERIK

After walking Cara back to the kitchen, I snag her cellphone number, then head upstairs to break the news to Lily.

Lily can paint me as the bad guy. I don’t really care, but I’m ending this farce before it further disrespects the woman I do intend to spend the rest of my life with.

My hand is poised to knock on the bedroom door—the last thing I want is to catch her in a state of undress—when I hear a male voice.

Soundlessly, I turn the knob and peer through the crack. I can’t see anyone, but when the voice says, “I’m taking you with me,” I stealthily retreat and duck into an alcove.

From photos, I recognize the man who emerges. Lily’s ex, Bo Abernathy, has Lily draped over his shoulder.

I’m not about to interfere with that. Those two have a lot to work out.

Bo walks with a limp, a war hero, but although she’s kicking and flailing like a wild woman, Lily is slender and light.

She’s attractive, but she doesn’t come close to my Cara’s beauty with her plump, inviting curves. Fuck, I just left Cara and already my cock is half-hard again. I’d love nothing more than to whisk Cara away to a fancy hotel or, better yet, fly her to my home in LA, and I will soon, but I have other business to attend to first.

While I’d rather have my molars extracted one by one, the private reading of my father’s will is today, and I have a feeling I may find the meeting useful.

Removing my bowtie, I shove it in my pocket as I stride purposefully out of the Kent mansion and into a waiting Uber.

The palatial estate on the edge of town is just as heavily-guarded as it was when I was here three days ago.

My brother’s brow raises when I enter wearing a tuxedo with my shirt collar open and the crusted remains of shrimp cocktail sauce down the front.

“Don’t ask,” I say, pouring a drink before seating myself in one of the wing chairs on either side of the hearth.

I’m introduced to the estate attorney, Gregory Holman, who explains preliminaries before donning his reading glasses and beginning his dry perusal.

“I, Sergei Nicolai Volkov declare this to be my last Will and testament…”

I zone out while he reads through sections on executors, funeral expenses, and payments of debt. At some point, I get up and pour myself another drink. I really have no interest in anything having to do with Sergei or his dirty money, but there is something I do want, so I’m patient.

When, finally, we get to the meat of the document Dmitry and I are both listening intently.

“…I leave the entirety of my estate including all holdings, policies, and proceeds to my eldest son, Dmitry Ilyia Volkov.”

And there it is.

The attorney continues, but Dmitry interrupts him by holding a hand up. “My legal team can review the fine details. Is there anything else of note contained in the will?”

The attorney flashes
